Brilliant Spanish - Review
From Living Spain Magazine:
Learning a new language is one of the most daunting aspects of moving overseas. The older we get, the more difficult we can find it. But making a little effort goes a long way with the locals and can make the transition into your new life far more rewarding. There are thousands of books and CD sets available to help you, and one of these is Brilliant Spanish. The creators believe that our brains are naturally disposed to learning a new language, and this new aid attempts to tap into that ability by developing an understanding of the structures and sounds of language, rather than simply working on vocabulary. The guide consists of a 232-page book and two 75-minute CDs, starting with the basics of introducing yourself, ordering food and asking directions and moves on to more complex issues such as describing what you have been doing. To make it easier to pick up and to clarify certain idiosyncrasies, there are boxes to explain cultural notes, language and learning tips and word builders, which demonstrate an easy way to recognise words. For example, if la estacion means station, and la escuela means school, what does especial mean? Simply take off the 'e' from the beginning of the word, and it's easier to translate. This does not claim that you will learn the language without even trying - this is simply not realistic - but it does guide you carefully through each stage, and allows you to learn at your own pace. There's a large glossary in the back (both Spanish to English and vice versa) and answers to all the activities and exercises mean you can keep abreast of your own progress. With this set you will be soon be asking for your own cafe con leche and bocadillo de jamon.
