A new article on Lithub, This Science Fiction Novelist Created a Feminist Language From Scratch, discusses the power of languages as a uniting force to bring about social change. But Elgin’s Native Tongue and its fictional language ‘Láadan’ is not the only, or the most famous, example of a conlang (constructed language). Readers may well be familiar with the conlangs of The Lord of the Rings, or Game of Thrones, or Star Trek’s ‘Klingon,’ all of which have a large thriving community of speakers! The amount of learners of these proliferating conlangs reveals something uplifting about attitudes to languages in general, namely, that life is much more interesting when one moves beyond monolingualism.
