The variety of interesting topics is excellent and the texts themselves are written in suitable Spanish for this level
Now that the teaching of the cultural topic at A2 level has served a fair trial period, teachers are no doubt looking for resources that are ready-made and deal specifically with the culture and civilisation attached to the foreign language. El mundo en español offers just that. It is a textbook for A2 level students and teachers of Spanish with a selection of authentic texts on a wide variety of topics relating to Spanish-speaking culture and society. It is worth noting the coverage of topics on el mundo hispanohablante as a whole, since many textbooks have a primary focus on Spain. Here we see texts such as ‘Tango en Buenos Aires’ or ‘Montevideo: la ciudad del alegre porvenir’, as well as texts relating to Spain, such as ‘Rafa Nadal: un número 1’ or ‘Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar: El Cid Campeador’. The variety of interesting topics is excellent and the texts themselves are written in suitable Spanish for this level - plenty of new vocabulary to pick up with the aid of monolingual glossaries on each page or so. The texts are broken up by photographs, as in a newspaper or magazine, and the font is clear. Each article is followed by some supporting language exercises and could quite easily be set as homework. The fact that all the texts are read aloud by a native Spanish speaker - accents from outside of Spain are heard - on an accompanying CD is a helpful touch I think. The quality of the material and the size are pleasing too. I particularly enjoyed the chapter that concentrated on explanations of the Spanish-speaking countries around the world and I am sure that students would also be keen to read this ‘travelguide’. The book is in Spanish throughout, save for English vocabulary items as part of the final glossary. El mundo en español is obviously aimed at learners who may not speak English, as the main glossary is in six languages (Spanish, English, French, German, Italian and Portuguese), so there is scope for some linguistic comparison for the polyglots amongst us.

fantastic for higher GCSE or AS easy intro
The selection of materials in this volume is extensive and covers many important aspects of Spanish and Latin American culture in a very lively and accessible way to intermediate students - the articles are well written and backed up with a vocabulary (thoughmight have been easier to add some vocab in English for GCSE students). It definitely give pupils greater insight into Hispanic culture and life and takes them out of the GCSE text book and into some 'real' Spanish and approaches very important Spanish issues, everything from Javier Bardem to the ubiquitous Macchu Picchu. Excellent library resource for schools or individual students/adults learning.
