The main character in the book, Anna, realizes that the people who wear trousers are free and therefore she wishes to wear trousers; to her they are the symnbol of freedom. Anna tells how she tries to break away from her oppressive family and how, in the end, she is sent away from holm because according to her parents she has brought disgrace on them.
