Privacy Policy

Languages Direct Ltd takes care of your personal information. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with and your rights.

Who we are

Languages Direct Ltd (company number 06615930), PO Box 1241, Bristol, BS39 5SY, United Kingdom, is the controller of your personal information. We are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (registration number Z1577437). For any question about your information, email support@languages-direct.com or write to us at the address above.

What we collect

  • When you order: your name, delivery and billing addresses, email address, phone number (if you give it), what you order and your subscription details. Payments are handled by Stripe, or by PayPal or Amazon Pay if you choose to pay that way; we do not see or store your full card details.
  • When you contact us: what you tell us in your message, email or call.
  • When you sign up to our newsletter: your email address and name.
  • When you leave a review: your name, email address and review.
  • When you use our website: basic technical information such as your IP address and browser, used to keep the site running and secure.

How we use it, and why

  • To process and deliver your orders and subscriptions, and to tell you about them – because we need to, to fulfil our contract with you.
  • To answer your questions and give you help – in our legitimate interests in looking after our customers.
  • To invite you to renew your subscription and tell you about back issues and related products – in our legitimate interests. We email you only about products similar to those you have bought from us, every email includes a way to opt out, and you can also opt out at any time by contacting us.
  • To send our newsletter – with your consent, which you can withdraw at any time using the link in every email.
  • To keep accounting and tax records – because the law requires us to.
  • To keep our website secure and working well – in our legitimate interests.

We do not sell your information, and we do not share it with other companies for their own marketing.

Who we share it with

We use carefully chosen suppliers. Most handle information on our behalf and only as we instruct; PayPal, Amazon Pay and Stripe (for its own fraud checks) also use it for their own purposes, under their own privacy policies:

  • Stripe, which processes card payments and uses information for its own fraud prevention (see Stripe’s privacy policy);
  • PayPal and Amazon Pay, if you choose to pay with them, which act independently and use your information under their own privacy policies;
  • Mailchimp, which sends our newsletter;
  • 34SP.com, which hosts our website, and Cloudflare and Sucuri, which protect it;
  • Google, which provides website analytics and advertising services, including remarketing (see Cookies below);
  • Royal Mail and other carriers, to deliver your orders;
  • LINGUAMEDIA SAS, the publisher of Bien-dire magazines, and Eli Srl, the publisher of Eli magazines, so that they can post issues to you;
  • our accountants and professional advisers, where needed.

Some of these suppliers may process information outside the UK, including in the United States. Where they do, we make sure it is protected by safeguards approved under UK law, such as the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or an adequacy decision.

How long we keep it

We keep your information only for as long as we need it: order and accounting records for six years after the end of the financial year they relate to, as the law requires; subscriber records for as long as you subscribe and for three years after your subscription ends, so that we can invite you back and deal with any later queries; and newsletter details until you unsubscribe.

  • Google Ads, to measure the results of our advertising and to show our adverts to people who have visited the site (known as remarketing);
  • Mailchimp, which supports our newsletter sign-up and measures how our emails and sign-up forms perform.

Apart from the essential cookies, these are set only if you agree in the cookie banner. You can change your mind at any time using the cookie settings button on our website, or by clearing the cookies in your browser.

Your rights

You have the right to ask for a copy of the information we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to object to or restrict how we use it, to take it elsewhere, and to withdraw your consent at any time. To use any of these rights, contact us as above; we will reply within one month.
