Stumbled on this fascinating article in the New York Times about three new news services, Worldcrunch, European Daily and Presseurop which take articles from leading European newspapers and translate them into English. Presseurop, which is part funded by the European Union goes one step further and publishes the articles in other member state languages. These new ventures all estimate that there is a growing interest in European News which is not adequately covered by the traditional English-speaking press. As regards perceptions within the UK, one wonders if better coverage of European news would lead to the positive spin-off of increased interest in second language acquisition?
