Thoughtful homage by Andrew Whittaker on his Speak the Culture blog to the great French film director, Claude Chabrol, who died on Sunday. Chabrol spearheaded the French New Wave in cinema and was renowned for his portrayal of the claustrophobia and repression of the French provincial bourgeois. Fittlingly, he made an oscar-nominated version of Madame Bovary in 1991.

Andrew Whittaker is the author of the highly entertaining reference guide to all things French, Speak The Culture: France.
